The New York Times: Travel
I can’t believe it!! I found the article about Japanese Made café from NYT. For years, Japanese readers of manga, and watchers of anime, or adult cartoons, have told that their No. 1 fantasy figure was the French maid. In this article the new style café was take as if it is a cool, new trend of Japan. However Japanese girl and women (I don’t know how boys thought) don’t have good images when they listen the word, “Made”. So please don’t get the wrong idea about this.

I think you mean "maid". But it was a provocative article. How far should the "cult of kawaii" go? Where is the line drawn between "cute" and "dependent and submissive"? And what images does it send to young, impressionable people in Japan? It made me think about the whole issue of dolls, especially Barbie Dolls, and the images of beauty they send to young girls. How can we teach young girls that "you shouldn't judge a book by its cover" when our society does it every day?
