CELL BLOCK TANGO

I’ll show you one part of my favorite song form CHICAGO.
This song is much better in Movies version than original Broadway version. But any way, this lyric is really funny. I think Rob MARSHALL, director and choreographer of the movie version, is a great person because this song was a little part of the Broadway version. But in the movie, this song is really cool.
In this scene, the six merry murderesses of the Cook County Jail song “Why I am here”. The reasons why they are in the Jail are ridiculous.

Liz.
You know how people have these little habits that get you down.
Like Bernie. Bernie liked to chew gum.
No, not chew. Pop.
So, I came home this one day and I am really irritated,
and I’m looking for a little sympathy
and there’s Bernie layin’ on the couch,
drinkin’ a beer and chowin’. No, not chewin’, Poppin’.
So I said to him, I said, “youpop that gum one more time…”
and he did.
So I took the shotgun off the wall and
I fired two warning shots……into his head.

Oh no, just he popped gum!!

I haven't had the chance to see Chicago -- either the movie or the broadway show, but it sure sounds like an exciting story. Violent, but exciting. I suppose there's something to be said for living out our homocidial fantasies in movies and fiction. And the "Chicago" era certainly was a more violent time in many ways. But jeez -- killing someone just for popping his gum? I agree with you: that's a little over the top.
